WI BIO - Dodge Co - ACKERMAN, John N. History of Dodge County, Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1880, p 618 John N. ACKERMAN, retired farmer, [City of Waupun, Dodge County, Wisconsin], was born in New York State on 22 April 1812, son of Jonathan A. ACKERMAN, who was born and brought up in Saratoga County, New York. John N. [ACKERMAN] came to Green Bay, Wisconsin, in 1836, and came to [the City of] Waupun in 1841. [Green Bay was part of Michigan Territory prior to 20 April 1836, when it became part of the Territory of Wisconsin. Green Bay is in Brown County, created in 1818, the same year Michigan Territory was formed.] He entered eighty acres in what is now the city of Waupun; there were no one but Indians here when he came. He [John N. ACKERMAN] was a carpenter by trade, and put up the first frame building in Fond du Lac [Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin]; there were only four families there then, and about the same number in Oshkosh [Winnebago County, Wisconsin]. Mr. [John N.] ACKERMAN is the oldest of the settlers in this part of the country, and his stories of ye olde times are amusing, and should be preserved. Mr. [John N.] ACKERMAN married, in October 1843, Hannah A. FORD, daughter of Chester FORD, one of the earliest and most respected citizens of Wisconsin. The children [of John N. and Hannah A. (FORD) ACKERMAN] are (1) George V., living in Dodge County; (2) Marion, who married S. J. SUMNER, living in Waupun [Dodge County]; (3) Charles H., living at home; (4) Alice, living in Green Lake County [Wisconsin], (5) Fred, living at home; (6) Edna, living in Dodge County; and (7) Frank, living in Dodge County. Mr. ACKERMAN has a fine farm of 170 acres, 130 acres in the City of Waupun. He was for twenty years Justice of the Peace, and twice President of the village, and was the first Mayor of the City of Waupun. Submitted by: Cathy Kubly
