WOODLING, farmer, Section 26, Town of Spring Grove [Green County, Wisconsin], one of the respected old pioneers, now living where he settled in 1845, was born 27 May 1809 near Germantown, Montgomery County [Philadelphia County], Pennsylvania, son of Jacob WOODLING, who was also born in Montgomery County [Philadelphia County], Pennsylvania, and was four weeks old at the time of the Battle of Brandywine. [The Battle of Brandywine was, near Philadelphia, where General George Washington fought British troops, occurred 11 to 12 September 1777. Thus Jacob WOODLING was born about August 1777.] He [Jacob WOODLING] died 13 October 1844 in Vigo County, Indiana. His wife [Mrs. Jacob WOODLING], the mother of John H., died 11 August 1859 at the residence of her son [John H.]. Jacob WOODLING had a family of ten children, seven of whom settled in 1837 in Vigo County, Indiana. The names of the children [of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob WOODLING] were: (1) Jacob, deceased; (2) John H. [the subject of this sketch]; (3) Francis, now in Brodhead [Green County, Wisconsin]; (4) Charles died in this town; (5) Eliza, wife of E. R. ALLEN, Esq.; (6) Maria; (7) Ann, deceased; (8) Polly, now living in Pennsylvania; (9) Jacob [second of that name], deceased; and )10) Catharine, deceased. The subject of this sketch, John H. WOODLING, was married 28 January 1841 in Vigo County, Indiana, to Nancy B. ROLAND [a maiden name?], and came here bringing his mother [Mrs. Jacob WOODLING] with him, arriving in Green County, Wisconsin, in 1845, where he bought 200 acres of land. Eight children were born to John H. and Nancy B. WOODLING: (1) Delia Ann, born 28 December 1841, wife of George H. SLOCUM; (2) Mary Jane, born 05 June 1844, wife of Cyrus A. HORTON; (3) Almina, born 15 October 1849, died 26 August 1850; (4) Chauncy S., born 23 August 1851, died 29 October 1852; (5) John Lyman, born 08 September 1853, died 14 January 1855; (6) Eunice L., born 04 January 1857, wife of Levi E. FREEMAN; (7) Emery R., born 16 September 1859, lives at home, and was married to Kate, daughter of Daniel BROBST, Emery R. and Kate WOODLING having had one child, John H., born 25 July 1883; and (8) Harriet E., born 06 December 1862, died 27 February 1864. Mrs. WOODLING [Nancy B. WOODLING] departed this life 01 March 1881. Mr. [John H.] WOODLING has always been an active, public-spirited citizen, and has served his town on the Board of Supervisors for a number of terms. Politically he has, since the organization of the party [about 1854], always been a Republican. He and his wife were members of the United Brethren Church until that organization here became defunct.
