RUSSELL, retired farmer, Markesan [Green Lake County, Wisconsin], was born 25 October 1809 in Litchfield County, Connecticut, a son of John and Charity [p 363] (EVARTS) RUSSELL. They were farmers, and natives of New York. Mr. [Charles E.] RUSSELL was raised and educated and lived in his native State [Connecticut] until he came to [the Territory of] Wisconsin in 1844. [The State of Wisconsin was created 29 May 1848.] He entered some land at what was known at Tichora, and the same year returned to Connecticut. [The Precinct of Tichora was in the part of Marquette County, Territory of Wisconsin, which became Mackford Township, Green Lake County, Wisconsin. Green Lake County was created in 1858 when Marquette was divided.] He again returned to [the Territory of] Wisconsin in 1847, sold the land he had entered, and bought the land he now owns, which is situated on the banks of Little Green Lake. His home has been in Green Lake County ever since. [In 1849 C. E. RUSSELL and John CHAPPELL platted Markesan, in what later became Green Lake County, Wisconsin. Markesan was incorporated in 1853.] In 1832 in Connecticut he [Charles E. RUSSELL] was married to Miss Catherine D. DEMING, who was born in Massachusetts. They [Charles E. and Catherine D. (DEMING) RUSSELL] have two sons and two daughters living. John RUSSELL, the oldest, is in Minnesota, and is engaged in farming. Emmet C. RUSSELL, the youngest, is living on the old homestead.
