REV. MARVIN G. HODGE,
former pastor of the First Baptist Church in Milwaukee, was born February 20, 1822, in Hardwick, Vermont. His father's
name was Levi HODGE, and his mother's maiden name was Fannie WHEATLY. She
was a descendant of a Huguenot family, who fled from France in the days of
persecution. He was educated in the public schools of his native village,
at the Craftsbury Academy and the Literary and
Theological institutions at Derby, Vermont, under the instructions
of Rev. Drs. Herman LINCOLN and Alvah HOVEY. He
began preaching when at the Detroit Institute. On the 15th of June, 1843, he was ordained by an ecclesiastical
council, convened at Charleston, Vt. In 1845, he
became pastor of the Baptist Church at Colchester, Vt. In 1846 he was
married to Miss Harriet L. KELLAM, of Irasburgh, Vt. In 1849 he
accepted a charge at Hinesburgh, Vt., where he remained two
years. He was afterwards pastor of a church at Stillwater, N.Y., until 1854, when he
removed to Brooklyn, N.Y., and took charge of Hanson Place Church. He was at the
same time editor of the Home Mission Record.
In the Spring of 1864 he removed to Wisconsin in the hope of
regaining his health. For four years he preached occasionally and also
served as one of the Secretaries of the Home Missionary Society. From
1865 to the Fall of 1871, he was pastor at Janesville, Wisconsin. From the Spring of 1872 to the Fall of 1878, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Kalamazoo, Mich. He received the
degree of D.D. from the University of Chicago in 1867. The same
year he was elected President of Wayland University in Wisconsin, but declined to leave
pastoral labor. In October, 1878, he accepted a call to the pastorate of
the First Baptist Church, of Milwaukee, which position he
lately resigned. He has had five children. Lizzie M. is the wife of
E. F. WELCH, of Janesville; Hattie O., the wife of J. S. HATCH, Washington,
