REV. HERMAN JOSEPH
HOLZHAUER, Pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, was born at Hocherzollern
Hechingen, in Germany, November
14, 1830; was educated at the Gymnasium of Ehingen on the Donau, and
at the University of Freiburg in Breisgau. He
came to the United States in 1853, and was ordained priest in 1854, and
appointed assistant priest one year at St. Mary's in Milwaukee. In the Spring of 1855, he was appointed to gather and organize a
new congregation, which is St. Joseph's; he organized the
school the same year. The next year he built the large brick
church. In 1869, he built the priest's house and in 1875, the brick
school house, having then fifty scholars. It now has over 700
scholars. One congregation besides, has been formed from St. Joseph's Parish. Father
HOLZHAUER holds no official position outside his parish. His duties as
pastor of this large congregation demand all his time and energies.
Twenty five of the twenty-six years of his priesthood have been passed in his
present parish. His service of one-fourth a century has been uniform,
pleasant and prosperous, and he is greatly endeared to thousands who have
enjoyed his ministrations.
