REV. GEORGE HENRY IDE,
Pastor of Grand Avenue Congregational Church, was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., January 21, 1839, took his preparatory
course at the Academy in his native town and entered Dartmouth College in 1861. At the
close of his freshman year, Mr. IDE enlisted in the Fifteenth Vermont Regiment
United States Volunteers for one year; was made Orderly Sergeant of his
company; served the full term of his enlistment, participating in the battle of
Gettysburg and several skirmishes. He
returned to Dartmouth in 1863 and graduated
in the class of 1865; taught the St. Johnsbury High
School one year, then entered Andover Theological Seminary from which he
graduated in 1869, immediately received a call as pastor of the First
Congregational Church in Hopkinton, Mass., and served that
society seven years. From Hopkinton, Rev. IDE received a call to the
Central Congregational Church at Lawrence, Mass., of which he had been
pastor four years, when he was called to the Grand Avenue Congregational Church
of this city, accepted and entered upon his work in December, 1880. Mr.
IDE was married March 16, 1872, to Miss Mary J.
SANBOURN of Newport, N.H., who died January 27, 1875, leaving two children,
Carrie S., born June 2, 1872, and Charles E., born January 11, 1874. April 27, 1876, Mr. IDE married Katie
E. BOWLES, of Newport, Vt. Rev. Mr. IDE is a
clergyman of fine presence and address, and is regarded as a decided
acquisition to the clergy of this city.
