REV. G. PARSONS NICHOLS,
Pastor of Immanuel Presbyterian Church, was born in July, 1837, in Windsor, Berkshire County, Mass. His academic
education was at Geneseo, N.Y. He entered Union College, New York, in 1856, from which he
graduated, in full classical course, in 1860. He then taught two years in
Warnerville, N.Y.; afterwards spent three
years at Princeton Theological Seminary, in New Jersey, graduating in
1865. After temporarily, supplying churches in Victor, N.Y., and Chicago, Ill., in March, 1871, he
settled in Milwaukee, in his present
pastorate. He was married in June, 1871, to Miss Delia B. NICHOLS,
daughter of Rev. James NICHOLS, a Professor in Union College, afterward Principal of
Geneseo Academy and Rochester Female Seminary.
They have four children - Robert H., Margaret P., Henry J. and Content S.
When he assumed the pastorate of Immanuel Church, which was a union of
two societies, it worshipped in a frame building, corner of Milwaukee and Mason streets, and
from its form was known as the "Steamboat Church." The
present edifice was erected in 1875, at a cost, when finished, of
$200,000. The membership, during his labors, has been doubled, and now
numbers fully six hundred. Two missions, Bethany and
Immanuel, having been erected during his pastorate, the former located in the
north part of the city, and the latter in the south. He is Trustee
of the Lake First Seminary, Illinois, and is connected,
officially, with several education and charitable institutions. Mrs.
NICHOLS is an official in both the Home and Foreign missionary societies, and
is an appreciated worker in social and religions circles. Dr. NICHOLS is
universally respected by citizens, and beloved by his people. Residence, No. 693 Cass street.
