REV. JACOB POST, D.D.,
Pastor of Perseverance Presbyterian Church, was born at Amsterdam, Holland, April 28, 1823. His classical
education was at Leyden University, in Holland. He spent several
years in mercantile business in Holland; came to the United States in the Spring of 1854, and immediately entered the Theological
Seminary at Auburn, N.Y., from which he
graduated in 1857; was ordained for the ministry in 1858, at Manlius, N.Y., where he preached
nearly three years. Mr. POST was afterward nine years at Oswego, N.Y. In the Spring of 1869, he was called to the pastorate of his
present charge, then known as the First Holland Presbyterian Church. Since
that date, he has been five years pastor of the Noble Street Presbyterian
Church in Chicago, Ill., but in the Spring of 1878, he as re-called to this church, which is
still the scene of his labors. The name of the church has been changed,
on his return, to "Perseverance Presbyterian." He was married
in Holland, in 1846, to Miss Henrietta COSYN,
daughter of an iron merchant in Gouda, Holland. They have ten
children - six living. His eldest daughter, Hermina,
is the wife of John A. CHAPMAN, a printer in Milwaukee; and Jeanette is wife
of Rev. John CURRER, Pastor of Presbyterian Church in Hebron, Ill. Mr. POST is
broadly humanitarian, yet strictly orthodox, in his views. Although a
foreigner, and preaching weekly in two or more languages, he is, nevertheless,
a patriotic American. Residence, 655 Sixteenth street.
