REV. FREDERICK S. STEIN, A.M., Pastor of the Spring Street Methodist Episcopal Church, was born March 1, 1847, in Alsenz, Bavaria, Germany.  When he was but six years of age, his father died, and four years later, he, with his mother, came to the United States.  They lived awhile in Chicago, and then settled in Black River Falls, Wis.  Having been thrown upon his own resources, at the age of 12, he began the battle of life alone.  At 15 he entered the preparatory department of Galesville University, in Trempealeau County, Wis., where he spent one year; was then a portion of a year at West Salem Seminary, in Wisconsin.  In his 17th year, he entered the freshman class in the University of Wisconsin, and graduated in full classical course in 1868, having the salutatory.  He then spent three years as Principal of the Schullsburg public schools, La Fayette County, Wis.  He was married June 21, 1871, to Miss Frances E. AINSWORTH, of Prattsburgh, N.Y.  She is a graduate of Franklin Academy, N.Y., and has been successful both as a teacher in public schools and as a preceptress in seminaries.  They have had four children: Kathrina, died aged 5 and a half years; Frederick, died at the age of 3 years; Herbert and William S. are now at home.  After marriage himself and wife had charge, for nearly five years, of the Rocky Mountain Seminary, in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The institution is under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  In August, 1873, he joined the Rocky Mountain Conference, and in October, 1876, was transferred to the Wisconsin Conference, and stationed at Wauwatosa, where he remained one year.  He was afterward pastor two years at Racine, Wis., and in October, 1879, was appointed to Spring Street Church, and reappointed in October, 1880.  His genial nature and able scholarship have endeared him to all within the circle of his influence.
