Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 232 Charles Whitlock HUMPHREY, editor, Poultney, was born 01 January 1870 at Poultney [Rutland County, Vermont], son of Robert J. and Cordelia (DRAKE) HUMPHREY. Educated in the public schools. Was a clerk in the post office from 1885 to 1889, assistant postmaster from 1893 for two years, retiring because of illness. Was in the drug business from 1897 to 1901, disposing of this business and purchasing the "Poultney Journal" in 1873. Republican; member of the Republican town committee for several years. Episcopalian; vestryman for ten years; secretary of the vestry, and clerk of the parish for six years; and choirmaster most of the time since 1893. Is one of the leading musicians of the section, having great success in quartet and chorus work. Member of Morning Star Lodge No. 37, Free & Accepted Masons; Poultney Chapter No. 10, Royal Arch Masons; Poultney Grange No. 289; organist in the two former for ten years; musical director in the Grange several years.
